Tunisia: Are Economic Decline and Political Violence Prevailing?
The African Studies Program at JHU-SAIS hosted an important event co-sponsored with Tunisian American Young Professionals (TAYP) and the Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED). The event is entitled “Tunisia: Are Economic Decline and Political Violence Prevailing?” and panelists include Mustapha Kamel Nabli, former governor of the Central Bank of Tunisia, Emanuele Santi, principal country economist of Tunisia at the African Development Bank, Stephen McChirney, executive project director on Middle East Democracy, and Alexis Arieff, analyst in the African Affairs Congressional Research Services.
The panelists gave an overview on the situation in Tunisia, two years into its democratic transition, with the idea that Tunisia is experiencing a strong economic decline and a sharp increase in violence. What is the outlook for the difficult construction of a “new Tunisia?” The event was moderated by Daniele Moro from the African Studies department at Johns Hopkins University SAIS.
